OK. I’ve received hundreds of emails from people from all over the world asking if they just received an ‘email spam from me.’ I can’t answer every email so, here. I am well and in NYC. No worries. I am afraid my email is not that well though… I have yet to delete all the emails from preoccupied colleagues… which, by the way, shows how well I am loved by so many people! So there, evil minds. Take that!
Helping the community: a library thing
17 10 2008Mid-October. 2.5 months to the end of the year. Good time to look back at what we’ve accomplish and what we’d like to complete before ringing in the New Year.
It is also a good time to look at ways to better serve our customers- mostly in this tough economic time. To this end, I thought of sharing two entries I posted on Multicultural Link this week: Library Services for Tough Economic Times – Part I (free services for all in the community) and Part II (services for job seekers). I continue to answer emails about how to serve communities as fast as I can, and thought that this might help libraries to get started on the coordination of services.
Now on a separate but possibly related note:
CNN Librarian of the year, er, there is a librarian among CNN Top Ten People Heroes of 2008
Librarian Yohannes Gebregeorgis founded Ethiopia Reads,a non-profit NGO that publishes books in local languages, promote literacy and reading, and creates libraries and reading centers open to everyone in the community! Read more about Ethiopia Reads here.

For New York City lovers
12 10 2008Wanting to visit New York?
Today’s New York Times dedicated most of its entire Travel section to New York. The basic theme is how to visit NYC without going broke. Fabulous tips for those who (regardless of hectic economic times), still want to visit.
Check out Frugal New York to learn how to survive on a budget of $250.00 a day. Fall Harvest of New York Deals includes more bargains not seen in years. In 36 Hours New York City, you will find all you need for a weekend on a budget. I also liked Islands of Style in a Sea of Grit featuring trendy hotels (although, of course, these are not cheap at all).
Finally, check all your tour-guide options reading One City, Six Ways to See It featuring guides by Fromer’s, Time Out New York, Lonely Planet, Fodor’s, and Phaidon (Wallpaper City Guide New York) and Hg2 (Hg2: A Hedonist’s Guide to New-York).

I really like my librarian!
9 10 2008-This post comes directly from American Libraries-
Gumdrops in the library
This catchy music video (2:07) stars a library, a librarian (right, played by Esse L. Maple), a fluffy library cat, a bunch of dancing kids, and a bunch of dancing Smittens. “Gumdrops” is from The Smittens’ third album, The Coolest Thing about Love. Scenes were shot in the Lawrence Barnes Elementary School library, Burlington, Vermont. The Smittens performed the soundtrack for the YALSA Young Adult Literature Symposium video….
