REFORMA President Report

Loida Garcia-Febo

2009-2010

Dear colleagues,

It has been a pleasure to serve as your President. My main goal for this 2009-2010 was to strengthen REFORMA’s position as an advocacy leader to ensure equitable access to library services by all members of our society and to their fundamental rights to know. I know that together we took our organization through a new era of changes to maximize efforts to better serve Latinos and the Spanish speaking.

Under the theme REFORMA: Building Community, REFORMA presented webinars about advocacy, social media, and professional development. I created Task Forces to recommend lines of action to include GLBT and Students into our agenda. Task Forces to renew our website and our AMS were created as well. Recommendations were presented at the annual meetings in DC.

REFORMA Programs at the ALA 2010 Annual Conference were planned, for the first-time ever, with four library associations: ALA, IFLA, PLA and SALALM. REFORMA President’s Program was coordinated with a national non-profit dedicated to promote reading, Las Comadres para Las Americas.

REFORMA continued working with ALA by developing Noche de Cuentos and donating funds towards Presidential Initiatives from ALA President, Camila Alire.

REFORMA Presence at the ALA 2010 Annual Conference:

Programs presented in partnership with four library associations and :

  • REFORMA & IFLA Latin American & Caribbean Standing Committee:”Successful Stories: Library Services in Latin America”

  • REFORMA & Public Library Association: “Advocacy and Social Media: Library Services for All in the Community”

  • REFORMA & ALA’s New Members Round Table: “The New Professional Paradigm: Redefining the New Librarian”

  • REFORMA & SALALM: “Latinos, Immigration Issues and Library Services”

REFORMA President’s Program: Building Community- in partnership with Las Comadres para las Americas, a national organization to promote reading among Latinos and Spanish speakers.

Description:

Saturday, June 26, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.@ WCC 203 A/B
Description: International authors highlight cultural elements that connects us all universally, globally. As librarians we walk various worlds and we bring all of these ideas with us to the reference desk, the children’s story hour, and to library programs and services. These transcend easily from the stories and narrative in books to actual service and relationships with the community. We have become a global community. Together you and I make the tapestry of our community. Each one is important, each one has value and worth, and each deserves respect for their contribution. Authors: Alberto Ferreras, Laura Lopez Cano, Beatriz Rivera, Ph.D, and Nora de Hoyos Comstock, Ph.D., President & CEO of Las Comadres.

Webinars presented in partnership with Webjunction:

Using Social Media to Make the Case for Supporting Library Services with IFLA and ALA

http://www.webjunction.org/community-relations/articles/content/86131538

Purpose: Share how non-profits such as libraries can use social websites to put access to information and libraries on the agenda of community leaders, elected officials, and local and national agencies.

Maximizing connections with Mini Conferences

http://www.webjunction.org/events/webinars/webinar-archives/articles/content/91731215

Purpose: Share best practices in planning, coordinating and hosting a “mini” conference from colleagues who have had success in their regions. In these times of tight budgets and restricted travel, attending national conferences has become impossible for many library staff. Many local and regional agencies are joining forces to coordinate “mini” conferences that provide the means of connecting and collaborating locally, often providing a more focused and meaningful experience for attendees.

Mission Critical: Services to Spanish Speakers

http://www.webjunction.org/events/webinars/webinar-archives/-/articles/content/97942789

Purpose: Share how your outreach efforts and your community can help position the library as critical in the eyes of stakeholders and decision makers.

New Task Forces:

GLBT Task Force

Student Chapters Task Force

Website Task Force

AMS Task Force

Resolutions approved by the Executive Board:

  • Resolution on Texas State Board of Education Curriculum Standards
  • Rose Violet Zertuche Trevino Scholarship
  • Resolution Opposing Arizona SB 1070
    • REFORMA Legislative Committee Chair, Sol Gomez worked countless hours with many colleagues from ALA Council and REFORMA to bring to Council this resolution. As part of ALA’s Committee on Legislation (COL) report, COL Chair, Mario Ascencio moved the resolution which was approved: Resolution to ensure equitable access to library services for all people regardless of immigrant status.
    • This resolution is the result of an extraordinary team work where many Reformistas worked around the clock during 1.5 day to produce a successful document. First, REFORMA Executive Board approved our resolution in an extraordinary session. Afterwards Sol, Mario, Carol Brey-Casiano, Jose Aponte and John Sandstrom consulted, reviewed and edited with many ALA Council and REFORMA colleagues. It was great to work with them.

REFORMA/Webjunction joint webinar:

Maximizing connections with Mini Conferences

Join us on February 17 for Maximizing Local Connections and Resources with “Min” Conferences, the second in a series of webinars presented in collaboration with REFORMA. In these times of tight budgets and restricted travel, attending national conferences has become impossible for many library staff. Many local and regional agencies are joining forces to coordinate “mini” conferences that provide the means of connecting and collaborating locally, often providing a more focused and meaningful experience for attendees. Since 2005, the Northeast Chapter of REFORMA has joined forces with ALA ethnic caucuses to present a terrific conference where library workers network, exchange ideas and listen to quality speakers. What started as an idea has grown into an annual event embraced by REFORMA, AILA, APALA, BCALA and CALA. Come hear best practices in planning, coordinating and hosting a “mini” conference from your colleagues who have had success in their regions. Webinar presenters include Loida Garcia-Febo, REFORMA president; Tess Tobin, REFORMA’s Northeast Chapter; and Janice Rice and Haipeng Li, co-chairs of the Joint Conference of Librarians of Color.

Best,

Loida
